The Facts

Information is the most valuable asset of every organization. It has been a major task for the CIO and MIS manager to scratch their head on how to develop a robust and flexible system to deal with data collection especially in the large size manufacturing facility. Although all kind of data collection device is easily available in the market from a lot of hardware vendors, from barcode I.D. to proximity or smart card, but none of these vendor is providing a complete solution that simplify the deployment process and provide the flexibility in integration as a total hardware and software solution.

Mix & Match

In most deployment today, the shop floor is flooded with different kind of data collection device due to the limitation of each individual feature. Example of a barcode reader can not be used to read the magnetic strips so 2 separate system is linked up on 2 sets of cable or network talking on the protocol of its own. Thus, interfacing between these systems requires substantial amount of programming work. And when it comes to collecting some reading of temperature or weight from a weighing scale, some other device is put in to do the job and not to mention the analog or digital control or monitoring job where you require a PLC.

As the results, different sets of cable are running like a web linking all these pieces together making the interface and maintenance a total nightmare.

Integration Work

Before you can integrate all these devices from multiple vendor together, an enormous amount of time need to be spent on understanding the protocol and also to establish some form of standardization in order for these device to come to term with each other. The behavior and functionality depend on every single programming code that is written to handle it in detail. In the event where the requirement change or the way the data is captured differently, the programming loop is again started to get the system to work accordingly.

This kind of system has made the cost of ownership very high and the time to deliver very long. Thus, making the implementation fail to take off or adapt to the changes at the timing when it is needed.

To End The Frustration

To give the user what they want and when they want it without the pain and frustration, a system has to be:
  1. easily programmable or perhaps, no programming at all will be the most ideal case.
  2. able to integrate with all kind of system available with the technology to-date
  3. able to share information across platform.
  4. flexible cabling system that can change with the production layout at any time anywhere.
  5. powerful feature that can let you capture data in various sources like keypad entry, barcode reading, smart card, temperature sensors, voltage reading, on/off switches etc. with one device, one protocol and one network.
  6. able to collect data in real-time.
  7. able to meet the budget, most importantly.

Papyrus And The Server Suite

Design from the bottom up to fit the requirement instead of requirement to fit. A product design by the system integrator for the system integrator that fulfill your needs and guarantee your deliverable. By putting together all the necessary pieces of software, it turns out to be the missing puzzle in the area of complex data collection system that is highly demanded by all the world class manufacturing facility today.
  1. The Hardware
Design that driven by the needs, with mock-able and flexible add on architecture allowing the system to extend the reach with the real world having all the interface required for addressing the needs in data capturing.

Human Interface - Data can be collected through human input via the membrane keypad and guided by the LCD display with clear and precise message prompting for every steps of the data collection process.

Serial Interface - The channel that allows the machine or equipment to talk to the system. By having this interface, a 2-way communication can be established between them to collect the data or even to control and monitor the activity.

Analog And Digital Interface - When dealing with the machine or equipment that is mute without a communication interface, the input or output that is trigger or require to control, can easily be achieved by picking up the signals or returning a signal through the intelligent processing of the hardware.

Add-Ons - Built with the standard that works with the standard, is allowing the standard add-on available in the industry to add to the list that expand the functionality of the system. The list of the add-on includes barcode wand, laser Scanner, proximity reader, smart card reader, i-Button, barcode printer etc just to name a few.

Mock Up - The mock-up option is to allow non-standard interface to be customized to expand the functionality when the needs arise. Example like, during a complex signal processing implementation, a signal conditioning board available as an option or even with special customization can be easily interface to work closely with the system. With this option, the system can work beyond the limitation where the limits can always be extended as and when it is needed.
  2. The Firmware
The instruction codes that decide how the Papyrus terminal behaves and how it processes the signal from all the interfaces. This logic has been put together through the experience and exposure gather from the implementation of the large-scale data acquisition projects in various industries for the past 10 years. These industries include semiconductor, chemical, textile and garment etc. As a result, the way the data is being collected can easily be defined and be categorized into 2 category that always exists in any data collection implementation. They are attribute data and quantitative data. The attribute data is representing any data which is not having any quantity value and for the quantitative data will be any data that is not define in the attribute data, that of course carry the quantity value. With these 2 categories, the firmware has been program to handle any kind of possibilities and combination of logic required when dealing with the input and output and replacing the complexity of logic handling with rules definition which can be downloaded from the software by setting up the rules table. With this powerful feature, the programming work is not require at all and any data collection requirement can be implemented or even be changed almost instantaneously.
  3. The Software
All the software that is needed in order to put up a system is readily available in what we call RSD (Rapid System Deployment) instead of RAD (Rapid Application Development). The software is carefully design with user friendliness in mind and targeting to simplify the job from implementation to integration. The software products are available under the ServerSuite and any of them can work independently or working together to handle any job from as simple as time attendance to a complex job like shop floor data collection.
  4. The Integration
Integration with existing legacy system or database of multi-platform and multi-vendor I.T. environment is a common scenario of any major data collection implementation. To address these needs, The ServerSuite product for integration like ServerSuite Gateway is available to make the integration part as easy as possible. And, if this is not enough to do the job, a client connector in Active-X and DLL (Dynamic Link Library) is available to let you customize your applications on your own with the popular tools that you are already familiar with.
  5. The Network
By having a good hardware and good software only is not good enough without having a flexible networking system. A networking system that connects the entire data-capturing terminal has to have the flexibility of connection, which is simple and cost effective and can adapt to the ever-changing production layout as and when require at the fraction of time. (Networking architecture).

The Benefit

A full range of Server Suite product and the Papyrus terminal family is all you need for any implementation of data collection project within your budget and the critical time line you have.

You can now focus on your business needs and let these tools to do the job or even get a team of consultant or system integrator to take care of putting the system together.

In addition to these, the system is so flexible to adapt to any requirement change in the future, the functionality or the feature will not be obsolete since it is software and firmware driven. A version upgrade is all you need for the system to continue to do the job of collecting all the valuable information in your organization. A successful implementation is to achieve the objective in time and at the right time. A system that is flexible to accommodate any requirement anytime will give the best out of the IT investment.
